October Meeting - Notes

At the October members meeting of the Chamber, Jeremy Edwards Chairman reported back to those present on the following matters:
Subsidised Parking in Falmouth - The proposed subsidised parking by Falmouth BID between January and March 2012. The company is looking for suggestions from Traders and the public about which days would be the most suitable. Members agreed Wednesday was a good option as historically this was the old half day closing in Falmouth and since then has always been a ‘slow’ day for the town. The prevision of  a free parking day should help to provide a lift for the town mid week.
Charter 350 Celebrations - The success of the celebrations for the 350th anniversary of Falmouth receiving its Town Charter from King Charles ll. The Chairman, committee members, and members of the Chamber attended a variety of functions to represent the chamber and join in the celebrations. These included a viewing at the Falmouth Art Gallery, Mayoral celebrations and church service which was followed by the taking the salute at Discovery Quay by the Royal Marine Band, the visit to Royal Navy Auxiliary ship Mounts Bay, and finally the banquet at Falmouth Hotel and the link up with 10 other Falmouth’s in the world. The banquet and world wide link up via Skype was a particularly enjoyable and reminder of Falmouth’s long history, contribution to the world’s development and the esteem in which ‘The Original’ is held by its namesakes.
Resignation of Treasurer – Following the resignation of the Treasurer Malcolm Farrar with effect from 31st December the kind offer of Bryants Accountants to take over the role was gratefully accepted.
The Proposed Special Conservation Area near St Mawes – This contentious issue was discussed at the Town Forum and other venues attended by the Chairman. The current proposal would potentially cause the demise of Falmouth as a working port with obvious consequences for businesses in the town and the future of the whole of south West Cornwall. Further representations are being made to all the parties concerned to try to find a more realistic solution this environmental issue.
Change of Venue – In future member’s meeting will be held at the Greenabnk Hotel The change of venue was felt to be appropriate in order to give support to all members in the area and on that basis each year the Chamber should look for suitable accommodation in a variety of venues. A letter of thanks will be sent to the Falmouth Hotel for hosting and supporting the Chamber meetings since the move from the Council Chambers last year. It was also suggested that the meeting day be moved from the current third Monday of the month however for continuity it was agreed to remain on this day (provided The Greenbank can accommodate us).
The next meeting will be at the Greenbank hotel at 6pm on 21st November.
The meeting ended at 7.30pm
