Preventing illegal working

The recent raids on local businesses by The UK Border Agency are a clear indicator that as employers we all need to be vigilant in checking our employees right to work and immigration status.

Illegal working hurts good business, undercuts legal workers and creates illegal profits. It also puts illegal workers themselves at great risk.

Unless an employer checks that all prospective employees have the right to work in the UK, it risks breaking the law and could receive a substantial fine.

The overwhelming majority of employers and migrants to the UK are law-abiding and want to comply with their legal obligations. We are keen to support them and make this as simple as possible.

We recommend you regulalrly check the UK Borders website for uptodate information on immigration rules and procedures.
To discover the checks that you need to carry out on your employees' entitlement to work see: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/employers/preventingillegalworking/
