Half of Falmouth faces our famous harbour, but the other half faces out to the open Sea. We are blessed with a variety of delightful beaches that we like to enjoy, and can share with you during the summer months.
Here is a quick run-down of the main ones - starting from under Pendennis Castle and going west.
Castle Beach: A narrow beach almost under the Castle and Falmouth Hotel. It features some lovely rock pools, and sand exposed in places especially at low tide.
Gyllyngvase Beach: A wide sandy beach in front of the Gylly Beach cafe and St. Mary gardens, and a couple of the larger hotels. This beach is Falmouth's busiest, but a delightful location with easy access to the smart Gyllys cafe, an ice cream bar, plentiful parking and toilets.
Swanpool Beach: Just out of the town and a 10 minute walk from Gyllyngvase, Swanpool features a steeper partly pebbly beach with a nice cafe, a water-sports centre, and plenty of activities in the summer, including a bouncy castle. When the wind comes from the South and East this can become quite a surf spot. Also features the Three Mackerel Restaurant on the cliff which has a nice menu and a view across Falmouth Bay.
Maenporth Beach. Another mile or so South, Maenporth is a very sheltered beach in a deep inlet, but often one of Falmouth's most tranquil. It large expanse of flat sand makes it very easy for children's paddling, and the rocks exposed at low tide present plenty of opportunities for climbing and rock-pooling. Maenporth also has a cafe and parking, as well as the smart Cove Restaurant just up behind the beach. The coastal path continues south from here towards to Helford River, with a couple of very quite beaches un-reachable by road.
Beaches at St Anthony's Point: Across the harbour from the town and reachable from St Anthony's Point lighthouse by path, or by boat. There are some delightful beaches over here which as you would expect from the lack of access are very quiet. People also like to fish off these rocks - this is a great spot for those of a slightly more adventurous nature. From the top of the point above the lighthouse spectacular panoramic views of Falmouth and the Harbour are available. To drive here from Falmouth requires crossing the King Harry Ferry, and then a drive through the lanes of the Roseland Peninsula.
Flushing beach: In the harbour and directly opposite Pendennis Castle and Falmouth Docks, this is a popular beach for locals, with a stone jetty often used for fishing. It also marks the start of a delightful harbour walk around Trefusis Head, towards Mylor Yacht Harbour and Restronguet.
