Threat to Tourist Information in Falmouth

Recent developments in the reorganisation of Cornwall Council and the impending budget cuts required under the government’s current spending plans have resulted in the likelihood that the funding currently provided by Cornwall Council in support of the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Falmouth will be removed. Consequently the Tourist Information Centre in Falmouth may have to close with the resultant loss of jobs and service provision for visitors.

Because so much of the local Falmouth and wider Cornish economy depends on tourism the Chamber sees this development as a major threat to the tourist industry. In addition, the involvement of Falmouth in the 2012 Olympics with the Finn sailing event will inevitably bring a considerable increase in visitors to Falmouth, making such a change in the tourist service provision at this time inconceivable.

The Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Falmouth District Hotels Association (FDHA) have begun representations to explore the possibilities of alternative funding strategies and are looking into the provision of the service through complementary information systems and venues. In pursuit of this, any suggestions or realistic proposals from members of the Chamber and the public at large on how this might be achieved should be forwarded to the Committee of the Chamber ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Whilst it may not be possible to maintain the TIC in its current form the Chamber and FDHS are hopeful that with cooperation from all the interested parties a meaningful tourist information service can continue to be provided in Falmouth in the future.
